The FAQ / Glossary.

Website design is full of buzzwords, phrases and hip, trendy things that cool geeks like to talk about. For the rest of us, here's a brief guide to some of the things you might get thrown at you just to make you feel dumb and foolish.

PPC - Stands for Pay Per Click. A type of internet advertising where the advertiser pays every time someone clicks from thier advert through to the website. Google results page show PPC adverts along the top and down the right hand side of the SERPS pages.

SERPS - Search Engine Results Page. The page you see after you've asked a search engine to look for something for you.

CMS - Content Management System. A type of website that displays content that changes frequently. The BBC News website is a giant CMS site. People's Blogs are another type of CMS. Typically the content can be supplied by registered 'authors' and is kept separate from the actual design, so people with little technical skill can update the site.

Blog - Geek word for Web Log. Generally displays the authors writing in chronological order and these days can be used by everyone from school children to large corporations. If used by a business, great care must be excercised to avoid allienating visitors with personal opinions / religieous beliefs etc.

RSS - Really Simple Syndication. A family of formats that feed content directly to your browser. You can subscribe to the 'feed' in a variety of ways.

Frames - A method of website design generally frowned upon and considered out of date. Very bad indeed for search engine visibility but was extremely popular in the earlier days of website design. Diehard proponents say that it's good because the navigation bar stays still when you scroll down. However, this can be achieved by anyone with any competence in CSS, so there's really no reason to continue using it.

CSS - Cascading Style Sheets. A page on a website separate from the main pages. It contains information that controlls the presentation of the website pages and define the colurs, fonts and layout of the website. It enables global changes to be mage to the look of a site by changing just one page. Perfect for when a client says, "You couldn't just change this font size to....." but also very useful for minimising page load times and lots, lots more

Flash Movies - Content generated by Macromedia Flash, which is a type of movie editing software that enables very cool effects. Very good for visually important websites where search engine visibility is not important. Flash content is invisible to search engines, thoug, so needs some serious SEO work to compensate.

SEO - Search Engine Optimisation. Good websites should have this in thier very foundations, below the damp course and in the very bedrock. Sadly, many don't. See my page on SEO about why it's vital.

Text Links - The type of link that changes colour as you move your mouse over it to show it can be clicked, like this. Search engines like text links because the words give information about the link to be clicked, which is nice....

Black Hat - Techniques used to artifically boost a sites search engine rankings using underhand methods. The white coated geeks at Google are constantly wising up to new techinques, so they rarely work for long and once you're found out, you get booted out. Avoid..

White Hat - The oposite of Black Hat.... Good techniques that search engines like and make things easy for them and their human visitors.

Q. Is it true there are spiders on the internet?

A. Yes, but arachnophobics need not worry, they're not really hairy with eight legs. A search engine spider is an automated programme that goes out onto the internet and follows links around websites. Making your website a friendly place for them to be is one of the important things in Search Engine Optimisation.

Q. Will I ever win the lottery?

A. Probably not, but keep trying.

Q. Why aren't there more FAQ's in your FAQ?

A. Because we can't think of any more right now. If you have a question, feel free to use our contact pages to fire it at us.
